An ectopic pregnancy (EP) is when a fertilized egg implants outside of the uterus (usually the fallopian tube). The pregnancy could be life-threatening to the woman if it is not removed. According to Planned Parenthood, EPs occur in two out of every 100 pregnancies. There are a number of factors that put women at an increased risk for developing an EP:

• A previous EP (either naturally or through an infertility procedure)

• Smoking

• A previous history of pelvic inflammatory disease or endometriosis

• Sexually transmitted infections

• Being age 30 years or older

• Becoming pregnant while using an IUD

Possible Symptoms

• Cramping, spotting, vaginal bleeding that is not occurring during the woman’s menstrual cycle

• Fainting or dizziness

• Nausea and/or vomiting

• Severe abdominal pain that is on one side of the body
