What is an Ectopic Pregnancy?

Posted on June 5, 2012 by

An ectopic pregnancy (EP) is when a fertilized egg implants outside of the uterus (usually the fallopian tube). The pregnancy could be life-threatening to the woman if it is not removed. According to Planned Parenthood, EPs occur in two out of every 100 pregnancies. There are a number of factors that put women at an increased risk for developing an EP:

• A previous EP (either naturally or through an infertility procedure)

• Smoking

• A previous history of pelvic inflammatory disease or endometriosis

• Sexually transmitted infections

• Being age 30 years or older

• Becoming pregnant while using an IUD

Possible Symptoms

• Cramping, spotting, vaginal bleeding that is not occurring during the woman’s menstrual cycle

• Fainting or dizziness

• Nausea and/or vomiting

• Severe abdominal pain that is on one side of the body

If you feel that you are experiencing symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy, you should call your medical provider immediately. The earlier a woman is diagnosed and treated, the better the outcome for the woman and her ability to become pregnant in the future.
